Ocean Beach, Dunedin - Research for the Ocean Beach Long-Term Planning Process

In October 2008, L&R New Zealand began a contract with the Dunedin City Council (DCC) to collect historical, cultural and social information relating to human interventions on Dunedin’s main city beach - Ocean Beach.

Since the colonial settlement of Dunedin, the foreshore and original dune system along Ocean Beach has been subject to intensive modification. Over recent years there has been ongoing issues regarding erosion of the foreshore and the impact this has on the adjoining Ocean Beach Domain and potential impact to neighbouring low-lying suburbs.

The DCC has begun a process to identify a long-term plan to mitigate the coastal erosion problems at Ocean Beach.  Part of this process is L&R New Zealand’s contract with DCC to collect historical information and identify other factors that may have contributed to the current situation. Another key component of L&R New Zealand’s contract with the DCC is to identify the key community aspirations for Ocean Beach, the foreshore and Domain.

Dunedin Ice Rink - Business Development Planning

The Dunedin Ice Stadium (DIS) is Australasia’s premier indoor ice sports facility.  The DIS opened in 2004 and provides Ice Hockey, Ice Figure Skating, Ice Speed Skating and Curling. Both the Ice Hockey Rink and Curling Rink are of an international standard and provide excellent ice quality.

The governing board of the DIS and the Dunedin City Council have recently entered into a service level agreement which recognises that the DIS is a key player in recreation provision in the region.  As part of this agreement the DIS receives council funding. In return, the DIS Board is required to produce a business development plan and annual budgets that demonstrate sound management principles, ensures wide public access and encourages participation (both organised and casual).

The Council has contracted L&R New Zealand to produce a business development plan that not only meets their requirements, but is also a realistic and useful strategic document for DIS management.
